I've been around the whole text-based gaming scene for a while now but drifted off around 3/4 years ago and started focusing on some personal businesses.

I know that the text-based game industry has dwindled, I'm just wondering if there is still a market for them at all?

Do games like Torn still have a high amount of active users?

And what do you think it would take in a text-based game to really "blow up" like games used to a couple of years back.

I think if done right, text-based games can still make a profit.

Will they "blow up"? Doubtful, but not impossible.

The market is still out there for them; however, the user base is less, so it is more difficult to bring a text-based game to life.

I wonder how much you'd have to invest in marketing now to hit the market that you'd want to hit.

It doesn't look like the "Top list sites" would be as effective or are as active as they used to?

They are still being used, but nowhere near what they used to be. Most people now find games through word of mouth or through app stores.

Usually the more money you put in marketing the more you get back (if your product is of any value that is). It's really rare and hard to get any money without investing into marketing. Want examples? Apple and Samsung products ;)
